The Whitman House (Home Movies Headquarters)
Well after midnight...
Todd Howard, Producer

It is considerably late, and I must get up at 4:15 AM tomorrow morning... I think I'll have 3 hours of nap time tonight. I just got back from a post production company called Pinnacle in Seattle - they are the folks that take our black and white negative film that we have already shot from the processing house (Forde Labs) and through a process called "telecine," transfer our sound and picture on to 3/4" video tape for us to view on a daily (almost daily) basis.

The bottom line??? Our film LOOKS absolutely beautiful!! Jesse Moore, the D.P. (Director of Photography), myself and Tarin Anderson (Assistant Camera) went in to take a look at the footage to judge how our overall picture looks. The exposure is wonderful, the black and white is so crisp and in perfect focus, and the acting that the kids did on that first morning (and every morning since) was simply great. At this point we only saw the "boys coming out of the post office" shot, and the "picker POV" shot. Picker is (was) Willy's guinea pig. They both looked great - we can't wait to get the rest of the dailies so we can really get a listen. I must say that the sound quality is staggering. Paul Westfall (Sound Designer) and Tim Haupt (Recordist) have been doing an absolutely great job.

The daily running of the set and the managing of shooting schedules and transportation for the actors, among other things have been trying but the kinks are begin worked out. I think we are just getting our sea-legs so to speak. The sun has been blazing down, and we are all coating ourselves with 45 SPF sunblock. Water is being consumed by the busload, and the actors are shielded by umbrellas from the rays of our closest star.

I expect that we will spend a few days really getting the "production machine" oiled. The grips and production assistants have been super and on the ball, and I must extend a true thank you to them. Our crew-call has been right around 6:00 am all week, and there is a tiredness in the eyes of some on the set. This too will take a few days to sink in. The fact is, we aren't going to be getting much sleep for the rest of the month.

I have to drive back up to Snohomish in three and a half hours, so I'm outta here... more soon.

-Todd
